Gerasimos Theotokatos is Associate Professor in the area of marine engines and marine engineering in the Naval Architecture Department of the Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Athens since August 2012. He graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 1994. He obtained a Doctor of Engineering degree from NTUA in 2001 in the discipline of Marine Engineering.

After finishing his undergraduate studies in 1994 and his military service in 1995, Dr. Theotokatos joined the Laboratory of Marine Engineering (LME) of the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NA&ME) at NTUA in 1996. He worked at LME from 1996 to 2001 as research engineer, doctoral candidate and teaching assistant. He participated in the teaching of a number of courses of LME including “Propulsion Plant Installation”, “Ship Piping Systems and Auxiliary Machinery”, “Marine Diesel Engines”, “Laboratory of Marine Engineering”, “Ship Energy Systems”. After completing his postgraduate studies, Dr. Theotokatos was appointed as Special Scientist in the Department of NA&ME of NTUA, where he taught courses in the area of marine engineering.

From 1996 to 2002, Dr. Theotokatos also worked in LME as research engineer in various R&D projects funded by EU in the area of marine engines including LIFETIME (Low In Fuel and Emissions Two-stroke Intelligent Marine Engine), ACME (Adaptive Control of Marine Engines), ATECS (Advanced Truck Engine Control System). His work included the development of simulation tools for modelling the marine Diesel engines and its subsystems as well as the ship propulsion plant subsystems and the prediction of the performance and emissions as well as the transient response of the engine and its turbocharger under various operating conditions. In addition, Dr. Theotokatos worked as a freelance professional mechanical engineer from 1996 to 2005, undertaking various technical and design studies of the mechanical and electrical installations of buildings.

From 2003 to 2004, he was teaching associate of the Merchant Marine Academy of Ionian Islands, where he taught the courses “Marine Engines” and “Mechanical Drawing”. In 2004, Dr. Theotokatos was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Naval Architecture Department of TEI of Athens. He is currently teaching the courses: “Marine Engines” and “Ship Piping Systems and Auxiliary Machinery”. He was the scientific responsible of a research project in the area of marine engines funded in the framework of Operational Programme for Education and Initial Vocational Training (EPEAEK), coordinated by the Greek Ministry of Education and the EU.

His research interests include: the development of tools suitable for the simulation of the ship propulsion plant and its subsystems, the prediction of the performance, transient response and emissions of the marine engines, the analysis of the engine and its turbocharging system operation under steady and transient conditions, the matching of the engine with its turbocharging system, the investigation of the engine and its turbocharger behaviour under adverse operating conditions and the development and testing of propulsion plant system control schemes.

Dr. Theotokatos has published his work in the ASME Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, IMAREST Journal of Marine Engineering and Technology, IMechE Proccedings (Part M) and in various conferences (CIMAC, SAE, ASME, IMAREST, IMECHE, IMAM) in the scientific areas of marine engineering, marine engines, internal combustion engines. Up to present, a number of over 50 references from other researchers to his publications have been recorded.
