Christoforos Kachris is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at University of West Attica since November 2023. He is the co-author of more than 90 peer-reviewed publications in the domain of reconfigurable computing and hardware accelerations and his work has been cited in more than 2700 papers.
From 2018 till October 2023, he was the co-founder and Managing director of the InAccel startup company and he was leading the efforts for easy and efficient FPGA deployment in the cloud. InAccel attracted 500,000 Euro seed funding Marathon, through the EquiFund framework and was collaborating with all the main vendors of FPGAs. InAccel received several awards for their innovative solutions like the Venture Impact Award in 2021 and the DeepBlue Cup International A.I. Science and Innovation Competition in 2019.
Before founding InAccel (2015-2018), Christoforos Kachris was the main initiator and Technical Project Manager at the NTUA/ICCS (Greece) of the VINEYARD (Versatile Integrated Accelerator-based Heterogeneous Data Centres), a EC-funded research project with a 6.3 Millins Euro Budget and 11 partners. VINEYARD was the first project that was working on the deployment of FPGA in the cloud, 2 years before the initial offering of FPGA in the cloud from AWS.
Before, joining NTUA, Christoforos Kachris was senior researcher in several EC-funded projects on Athens Information Technology (AIT) in Greece (2010-2014) where he was leading the research efforts for the utilization of optical interconnects in data centers. One of his paper (A Survey on Optical Interconnects for Data Centers) was one of the 28 most-cited articles on "Big Data" Research since 1980 - 2022 with over 1022 citations. Christoforos Kachris has also attracted research grant directly from Xilinx Research Labs in 2018 due to his exceptional research on the domain of FPGAs and hardware acceleration. His research efforts have been recognized in several international competitions like the awards he received in the Open Hardware Contest in 2018, and 2020.
Christoforos Kachris holds a Ph.D. from Delft University of Technology in Electrical and Computer Engineering (2007) and a M.Sc. and Diploma from Technical University in Crete (2001, 2003). His Ph.D. was focused on Reconfigurable FPGA-based Network Processing platforms and during his Ph.D. Christoforos worked as an intern in Xilinx Research Labs in San Jose (Silicon Valley) where he was granted a US patent on the Configurable Transactional Memories in FPGAs.
Christoforos Kachris has not only a solid and strong background on the domain of hardware accelerators and the FPGAs but also in interdisciplinary expertise on the domain of cloud computing, network processing, optical interconnects and ML acceleration. Besides his research achievements, Christoforos has a strong background on the technology transfer of the research results in the market. As the cofounder and director of InAccel he holds solid experience on the commercialization and technology transfer of research results.
